The New World (PM)

WHOAAAAA! WHOAAAA! A haiku competition! Does this competition have a limit of how many entries we can do?!!? Because we have a backlog of something like 400* haikus and at least a third of them have to be about food, right?

Here are some potential winners. From K:

Jerusalem artichoke
I
You look like ginger.
Just as wasabi looks quite
Like avocado.
II
But you're a tuber
And that is one of my most
Favourite plant words.
III
The other one's named
After the whole globe! But you:
Just Jerusalem.
IV
Don't feel bad 'bout that
Jerusalem artichoke.
I dig on your taste.

Which is especially good because I did notice that the RN website said this: write a haiku about food and flowers. Really food and flowers? How about coffee, which is edible and from a plant?

From me:
Well hells yeah, coffee
You turn my frown upside down
An undying love
From K:
Single origin.
Since when has that been a thing?
Get your hand off it.

Or perhaps we should be using our vast haiku experience to write a new winning entry. All I know is that I would love to have a successful garden and I want that bible!

Things we're loving right now (AM)

You know how on some blogs, or in magazines back in the times when they were a thing, there is a post or a page called something like Things we're loving right now that showcases a bunch of products that the authors are loving fully sick? And often those things will be something like a $100 candle or $200 hat? And it will say something like
"We are OBSESSED with the new lip gloss from Wherever....the luscious texture and subtle shades...  it's a must-have for those lazy summer afternoons...at $50 a pop you'll want one in every colour!"
Yeah, I hate them too.
But this morning, in the shower, I was using the stuff I use in the shower and it smells so nice and makes my skin feel so nice that I felt compelled to write about how much I love it.

Here it is.

The Aesop geranium leaf body scrub. J put me on to it a while ago. It smells lovely and has little bits of pumice in it so it feels kind of rough when it goes on the skin. But kind of invigorating, like when you get your hair brushed at the hairdresser and they go a little bit hard, but once they get all the knots out you think "yes, this is good for me". It feels like that. And afterwards your skin feels as soft as marshmallow.
But really it's the smell that really does it. Somehow light and fresh and deep and musky at the same time. Who knew that a nuff nuff flower like the Geranium would have a leaf that if put through what I can only assume is some pretty intensive processing, would smell this great.

Nuff Nuff geraniums in a pot.
This guy? You think this guy knew? There's no way. No one knew! But it does, and now Aesop package that stuff up in to pleasantly shaped and styled vessels and I for one am very glad about that.

So that's the thing I'm loving right now. And I'm sure this goes without saying, but this is absolutely not a paid advertisement.  Are you kidding? I would love Aesop to pay Miss Soft Crab to use their products. Instead, we pay them. I'm just telling you because I really do love this stuff. And when I back it up with the geranium leaf moisturiser, I basically feel like I'm on top of life, and maybe living the kind of life that belongs in a magazine.

Haiku Thursday (AM)

If I was a bumblebee

I
I would shove my face
In every last rose I saw.
I would love the spring.

II
I would take short breaks.
From collecting the pollen.
I'd perch on a leaf.

III
There, I'd close my eyes.
Feel the sun on my wings and
Dream about the queen.

Nature, you're so fine (PM)

The plants in springtime are so goddamn pretty that yesterday, when I had to drive to Moe for work, the abundance of blossoms on the trees were so beautiful and so heartwarming I thought you know what Moe, you're OK by me!

Moe, you guys.

That's springtime for you. Or more specifically, nature in springtime. Try getting another season to make me feel that way about  a town famous for being Victoria's gateway to brown coal, and crime.
Back in the city, I am extremely jealous of that garden that grows at J's parents house. It's always been an absolute beauty but it looks stunningly beautiful right now. I think I had better come over this weekend to have a look for myself. Ok you guys? Good, that's settled then.

My springtime plants are a little more modest. You know how it is with a balcony garden. I've laid a bunch of seeds, ready for some late spring/early summer blooms, so at the moment there's a lot of green and not a lot of colour.

But soon, readers, soon.

Nature, you're so fine (AM)

On the weekend K and I were lying in the park rejoicing in the sunshine and how great spring can be but although spring can be so great and we all love it, really it is just like the girl Caroline in the smash hit Outkast single, 'Roses':
..all the guys would say she's mighty fine
But mighty fine only got you somewhere half the time
And the other half either got you cursed out, or coming up short

Right?! I mean spring can be so pretty and great, but the other half either got you cursed out or too cold, wet or windy. But unlike Andre 3000 I don't want spring to be:
...speeding on the way to the club
Trying to hurry up to get to some
Baller or singer or somebody like that
And try to put on her makeup in the mirror
And crash, crash, crash.. into a ditch!

Me, I'd rather things worked out like in Mean Girls, you know, how Rachel McAdams figures out she can be pretty and nice. Spring, be more like that.

Anyway yesterday on that weird cool grey day I was wishing spring could just be more warm and sunny and springy, but then I went into my Mum's garden and I saw another thing that is really good about spring. PLANTS!

I guess there is more to spring than sunshine and warmth. Maybe spring isn't the bitch in this outfit at all. Maybe its me.

Flowery succulent!

Red succulent!

Nasturtium!

In real life this flower is practically neon!

Fern covered in adorable little green things

Adorable green things up close

Sorry I said you were like Caroline in Roses, spring.

Haiku Thursday (AM)

Springtime
Pretending I could
Love other seasons ends with
The first breath of you

Magnolia
You're the herald of
Springtime. And also one of my
Favourite movies.

Irritation
You turn up some days
And you refuse to fuck off
For love nor money.

Haiku Thursday (PM)

Dead jonquils on my bedside table
Such pretty babies
When alive. Now, Reminder
Of my laziness.

Dead daphne on my kitchen table
I
Heavenly perfume
Or, the memory of it
Is why I keep you.

II
In addition to
My being lazy as a
Cat on a heater.
